Something to blog about
It's true what she said. With a lot of encouragement from her. It's called Victoria-Pictoria Photography. I filed the papers and opened a bank account last spring and have been working (working working working) and learning (learning learning learning) all summer, slow and steady, to build a small photography business.
I've acquired a domain and hosting. I'm working on a website and proofing gallery. And pricing. And a blog -- a Wordpress (*gasp*) blog. I know! I've been a Typepad girl for.ever! Acquiring it was as easy as pushing a button; posting will require pushing a few more. I'm still figuring out my approach there... you'll be the first to know.
Oh, yeah, I've been taking pictures, too. Most of it's been for free. Weekend after next I'll have a couple of paying gigs, and there's an event on the books for mid-October that should be great, and a few other irons in the fire. It's exciting. Building. Sickening. Oh yeah, I feel ill before every shoot. But it's fun, right?
I decided to do this for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is to have a little fun doing and learning something that I love and, hopefully, to generate some needed extra income. So far, I've been having tons of fun, even though I've done nothing but spend hemorrhage money. And I sure could spend a LOT more. All I can say is that I've definitely been doing MY part to keep the economy going this year! It doesn't appear that it's been enough, though. Maybe if I pre-ordered the new Canon 5D...
Heh. Just kidding. Maybe. No... really. I'm kidding.
Mostly, I'm doing this because I still can!! Because if I don't do it now, if I wait until the "time is right," when the hell will I? Because what am I waiting for? Because I'm going to be 50 in less than two months and, damn it, it's going to be a NIFTY FIFTY!!
More than anything else, of course, I'm doing it because of my girls... for them, with them, to them, inspired by them, encouraged by them, motivated by them, as an example to them. All those things and more...
What goes around comes around.

Hemorrhaging money, snort, that's wicked! Congratulations! So, if you're on your wordpress blog and trying to post you tube videos and have some trouble, send me an email and I'll point you to the post that explains all (it took me nearly a year to find this... it's simple, but if you don't know what button to switch, it'll make ya CRAZY).

Whatever you do, DON'T ORDER THE 5D. So not worth it. Wait until they come out with something you'll really want. It's too slow and no pro I know wants the video (oh my god what a WASTE) and 20 megapixel is so far beyond overkill you might be reborn....
Did I mention how much I want a new camera (I've been diligently shooting with my 4yr old body NOT spending on the next new thing) and Canon keeps disappointing me.

I noticed the Victoria-Pictoria tag on your Flickr pics and loved it. Plus you mentioned going to Madison to shoot (in the slang sense) a baby -- I was wondering.
That is awesome. Scary, no doubt, but exciting! You've got the eye and the talent, woman. Make the most of it! And good photography brings happiness to everybody. It's a win-win situation.

FOR YOUR GIRLS is the best reason. And me too. My daughter is totally proud of me and what I'm doing, and inspired by it. And that's the best payoff.

Such great news! Photography is an expensive proposition (oh I just want more lenses all the time!) but you're finding a way to turn it into an income and that's a wonderful thing. You're such a great mom, Vicki. Your girls are lucky to have you.

GO VICKI!
I came home from a film festival movie last week thinking "What on earth am I doing with my life?" - The movie was called, "The Strangest Dream" and was all about Joseph Rotblat. It made me realize that it is time for some very serious changes around here!

Congratulations, indeed. We're never so old that we can't start off in a new direction in life, and learn something new and exciting.
Posted by: Lorette | 24 September 2008 at 02:26 PM
Wow, what a big step! I wish I had the courage (and skill) to do the same. I'm learning, too, but nowhere near ready to take on any clients. You go, girl! It's gonna be great.

Wow! Congrats and good for YOU! What a great attitude on seizing the day, 50 may not be old but those numbers ending in zero do give us pause to stop and evaluate. Way to go to say yes you can, it is encouragement to us all to remind ourselves of the same. (I'm catching up on blog reading and I love your new hair cut, btw.)
